A green light for the Abarth 695 biposto

The sixteenth edition of the Gumball 3000 rally has set off from its starting grid in Ocean Drive, Miami. The prestigious event, which is restricted to 120 supercars, will follow a route of over 5,500 kilometres on a 7-day journey through the United States and Europe.
As "Official Automotive Partner" to this 2014 edition of the Gumball 3000, Abarth is reinforcing its role as supercar by accompanying participants on all stages of the route. Five cars in Abarth's current American range are to star in the stage from Miami to New York until the Abarth 695 biposto debut on Sunday 8 June in Edinburgh. The Abarth 695 biposto, the "Official Car" of Gumball 3000, was unveiled in a dedicated livery bearing the number "1" in Turin today.
The car's Gumball 3000 livery brings out its muscular proportions while also drawing attention to the parts derived from the world of racing used to make the Abarth 695 biposto the most extreme 500 ever built. The "Official Car" of the 2014 rally will carry the prestigious no. "1" in recognition of its leading role among supercars.
Presented at Geneva in March this year, the 695 biposto has already become an icon of the Abarth brand. It's 190 HP, 1.4 T-Jet engine is the most powerful ever installed in a road-going Abarth, and its dry weight of only 997 kg makes it one of the very few sports cars to boast a weight to power ratio of 5.2 kg/HP, easily a best in class. And that is not all. On top of that, an ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds makes the Abarth 695 biposto the fastest front-wheel drive saloon on the market today. It is also the first car in the world to offer an H-pattern gearbox with dog rings and polycarbonate side windows, both homologated for road use. And in fact, it's the road-going reinterpretation of the Abarth 695 Assetto Corse, competitor on racetracks throughout Europe and made in the Officine Abarth Mirafiori in Turin: craftsmanship and attention to detail, typical of Abarth's most exclusive cars, meet the best of race car technology.
In developing this new brand icon, Abarth has had support from partners of excellence like Selenia for the lubricants, Akrapovic for the exhaust system, Extreme Shox for the adjustable shock absorbers, MXL for the digital data logger, Sabelt for the Abarth Corsa seats with four-point belt, Brembo for the braking system, OZ for the lightweight 18" wheels and Poggipolini for the light titanium rear roll bar.
The Abarth fleet scheduled to run the 2,700 and more kilometres of the rally's European section will also include five models of the latest model year and two 595 50th Anniversary cars, representing the entire Abarth range.
Italia Independent, one of Abarth's historic partners, has developed a special product to celebrate the supercar star of this year's Gumball. Italia Independent's latest sunglasses, dedicated to the Official Car of Gumball 3000, have been developed as part of the company's Tailor Made project on the basis of their best-selling 090 model. The new sunglasses feature a matt grey frame and temples. The Abarth logo appears on the outside of one temple, while the car's logo appears on the other. The wording "Tribute to 695 biposto for Gumball", inside the temples, completes the customisation. The lenses are in deep black. A special, limited edition of only 30 examples is being produced for the participants in this year's Gumball.
Furthermore, the technical jacket from the Abarth Tales line, produced by Tramontano Automotive in special edition for the Gumball rally, has been designed taking advantage of the best textile technology: hi-tech materials, which absorb the energy developed by the body and give it back as far infrared rays (FIR), and fibre carbon fabrics capable of protecting the body from electromagnetic radiation.
Supercar fans can follow the event on Abarth's own official channels and in the dedicated section of the www.abarth.com website, which will also diffuse content produced in real time during the various stages. In particular, exclusive videos and special behind-the-scenes reports will be posted by Marchettino, one of YouTube's most influential contributors of automotive content, with over 150,000 visits to his channel. Marchettino's channel is becoming the official "YouTubers for Abarth" channel for the rally.
But Gumball 3000 is not just about roads and engines. From 4 to 11 June, at the end of each stage in the 2014 "Miami 2 Ibiza" rally, seven unique lots will be auctioned off by the Gumball 3000 Foundation in collaboration with Christie's, the world's most prestigious auction house, with proceeds donated to charity. Items include memorabilia like an official Manchester City shirt signed by the entire team that has just won the UK Premier League and an "art car", hand painted by Alec Monopoly, who will be at the final evening event on the beautiful island of Ibiza.
The art car to be auctioned by Gumball 3000 has an estimated value of $ 100,000 to $ 200,000. Its design is the artist's attempt to capture the sensation of speed associated with motor racing. With a background inspired by Jean Miró, the work conveys the idea of a "racing lady" in stark contrast with random splashes of paint. Alec Monopoly has certainly remained true to form in this latest work: known to the international public for his satirical use of characters, his famous Monopoly Man, dressed in tuxedo and top hat, makes an appearance on the side of the car.
Maximillion Cooper, CEO and founder of Gumball, invited the famous American street artist to paint an Abarth 500 purchased by the Foundation as a symbol of the union between the worlds of art, cars and popular culture. Monopoly's work has achieved cult status among many collectors, and there can be little doubt that this car will attract enthusiastic bidding.
The Gumball 3000 Foundation is a charity committed to offering future generations opportunity, optimism and ambition by providing education, infrastructure and environmental projects for underprivileged youngsters.
